Some years ago my firm had the misfortune to employ not one but a series of woefully incompetent book-keepers. Our accountants would not help – they plainly wanted to keep as far away from the mess as possible. We only knew how far our finances had sunk into a quagmire when summonses began to arrive, followed shortly by bailiffs and the HMRC.
